One World Berlin Filmfestival
The 7th annual ONE WORLD BERLIN Film Festival for Human Rights and Media is being held from November 25 to December 1, 2010 at the Arsenal Cinema in Berlin.
This year’s highlights include the German premieres of SOUTH OF THE BORDER, Oliver Stone’s intimate portrait of Hugo Chávez, Raul Castro and other Latin American heads of state and TERE BIN LADEN by Abhishek Sharma, a Bollywood comedy of errors featuring a fictitious Al-Qaeda video message and a Bin-Laden double. Three more German premieres are in the program: Stephanie Boyd’s OPERACÍON DIABLO which unveils how an American mining company monitors the movements of Peruvian human rights and environmental activist Marco Arana. Marco Arana was this year’s recipient of the Aachener Human Rights Award; THE UNWELCOME winner of this year’s Audience’s Choice Award at the One World Festival in Prag. The film accompanies – over a time span of twenty years – five people who were put into homes as children;. COMPLAINTS CHOIR by Ada Bligaard Søby, a film about an extraordinary art project. In cities around the world people come together to express their complaints about their everyday life and social issues using music.
Berlin premieres: Sebastian Junger’s and Tim Hetherington’s Afghanistan reportage RESTREPO, which won the Grand Jury Documentary Prize at Sundance; VIDEOCRACY, a satirical documentary by Erik Gandini (GITMO) about Silvio Berlusconi’s television republic; LOVE, ME PLEASE! by Valery Balayans, about right wing extremist organizations in Russia; FAMILIA (Best Documentary at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival) by Mikael Wiström and Alberto Herskovits about a woman who leaves her family after 34 years of marriage to look for a job in Europe; and GASLAND, Josh Fox’s activist documentary about drilling for natural gas and its effects on the environment and health.
The festival opens on November 25, 2010 at 7:00 pm at the Arsenal Cinema with ZERTIFIKAT DEUTSCH, Karin Jurschick’s cinematic reflections about a so-called ‘integration class’ at a center for adult education in Cologne. After the screening a discussion will be held with the film’s director and Günter Piening, the Berlin Senate Commissioner for Integration and Migration. Moderator will be Werner Koep-Kerstin, board member of the cooperation partner Humanist Union.
