Sabina Vajrača, a Bosnian-American filmmaker, wins the Claims Conference’s Short Film, Large Subject Emerging Filmmaker Contest

The film contest of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) is for emerging directors focused on the Holocaust. This year, the contest received thirty-nine applications from seven countries. Gideon Taylor, President of the Claims Conference, said:
“The Claims Conference is pleased to provide a new generation of filmmakers the opportunity to bring to life the memory and lessons of the Holocaust. We are proud to facilitate the creation of these narratives and documentaries. Film is a critical medium when it comes to telling the story of the Shoah, and it is an incredible opportunity to support these directors as they share their unique lens on this history. This film comes at another pivotal moment in history when we are witnessing the importance of standing up – of not being a bystander.”
The winning film is inspired by a true story of two heroic families: one risked their lives during the Holocaust — the other returned the favor five decades later!

Rencontre avec Sabina Vajrača, cinéaste bosnienne américaine

Sabina Vajraca, née dans une famille bosnienne de Banja Luka, deuxième plus grande ville du pays, aujourd’hui capitale de l’entité serbe, a été obligé comme de nombreux citoyens, de prendre la route de l’exil. Au printemps 1992, l’adolescente de 14 ans quitte sa terre natale et toute seule trouve un abri en Croatie. Elle a déjà écrit un roman sur une fillette et un chat. La petite fille et son félin ont rencontré un jeune garçon qui voulait sauver la terre entière. Dans la capitale croate commence sa collaboration avec le journal Taatralije consacré au théâtre, qu’elle a fondé avec quatre amis. Deux ans plus tard, en 1994, Sabina quitte Zagreb pour se réfigier à New York City.
Son premier film Sur le chemin à la maison, dans l’inconnu (Back to Bosnia) projeté au Festival d’Amnesty International au Nouveau monde à été dans les sélections officielles au Brésil, Canada, Liban, en Afrique du Sud, Allemagne, Pays-Bas, en Slovénie…Talentueuse cinéaste diplômée de la Columbia University a aussi obtenu le prestigieux Director’s Choice à Crossboard Film Festival et son documentaire de 57 minutes, classée parmi les 100 meilleurs films réalisés par des femmes! Elle a été aussi nommée pour le Student Award Grand Prize et Student Oscars. Cette année la jeune femme fut parmi les candidats de l’Humanitas Prize et nommée pour les BAFTA Student Awards, grâce à son court métrage Variables.
