TIFF 2017: Movie magic from math and science

Math and science are hot topics with contemporary filmmakers. Think of the brilliant portrayal of African-American mathematicians and scientists in 1960s NASA in Hidden Figures or the tale of mathematical genius, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and his groundbreaking work with Godfrey Hardy at Cambridge University in The Man Who Knew Infinity.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), underway this month, is not immune to the charms of math and science, with past crowd-pleasers such as The Theory of Everything and The Martian. As a mathematics professor with a love for film and a Patron’s Circle membership that offers access to many of the festival’s premieres, I go on an annual search for STEM-centric movies.

Vom 20. bis 27. September findet das Festival Korea Independent im Babylon statt. Insgesamt acht Filme werden gezeigt: Vier Dokumentarfilme und vier Independent-Filme. Der Eröffnungsfilm: Steel Flower, ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis der Jury auf dem 14. Festival International du Film de Marrakech: Der Jury-Vorsitzende, der Regisseur Francis Ford Coppola urteilte: „Ein sehr neuartiges und schönes Werk. … Das war eine sehr emotionale Erfahrung“.

La Corée du Sud est traditionnellement une terre cinématographique très productive. Pendant longtemps la majorité des films était destinés au marché local, (…).
Depuis une dizaine d’années, le cinéma coréen voit émerger un cinéma plus indépendant, avènement qui correspond à un changement de politique économico-culturelle, imposé en 2006 par les États-Unis dans le cadre d’un accord général de libre-échange : alors qu’auparavant un quota obligeait les salles coréennes à diffuser 146 jours par an des films nationaux, le quota est tombé à 73 jours. Dans un premier temps, la production sud-coréenne a drastiquement été réduite, mais comme souvent dans le domaine de la culture quand il est en crise, de nouvelles idées émergent avec une nouvelle génération de créateurs.

Bojan Golija – a retrospective in Maribor, Slovenia

Golija’s art evolved from the early, socially charged figurative prints from the 1950s that were created under the influence of his mentor and close friend Božidar Jakac, to increasingly abstract compositions, in which the realistic starting point is first replaced by the stylized dynamics of sharply delineated surfaces in black and white and colour woodcuts. Golija perfected his woodcutting technique during his stay in Japan. He travelled there in 1957 at the invitation of the later chairman of the International Art Education Association and the assistant director of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and thus became the first student from the Academy in Ljubljana to visit Japan after World War II.

Cette recherche méticuleuse a été initialement motivée par son intérêt pour les musiques électroacoustiques et acousmatiques. Avec le temps, il a creusé un chemin musical profond et personnel.

Le couple Besson divorce. Pour protéger son fils (le très prometteur Thomas Gioria) du père (Denis Ménochet) qu’elle accuse de violences, Miriam (Léa Drucker) en demande la garde exclusive. La juge (Saadia Bentaïeb) en charge du dossier accorde une garde partagée au père qu’elle considère bafoué. Pris en otage entre ses parents, Julien va tout faire pour empêcher que le pire n’arrive.
Pour ses débuts, Xavier Legrand choisit l’un de ces films qui racontent une histoire passionnée, pour aborder un thème difficile et délicat : la violence conjugale. Ce jeune réalisateur français n’a pas oublié que l’engagement et les thèmes ne sont pas et ne doivent jamais être le substitut d’une bonne trame et d’un scénario travaillé.
